Biederman was born in Cleveland and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to New York. There he encountered the works of the European modernists and incorporated the vocabulary of such movements as cubism and surrealism into his works. The present biomorphic work is characteristic of his paintings from the mid-1930s, which were among the last paintings he did before he invented the three-dimensional aluminum wall sculptures that would remain his focus for much of the remainder of his career. Biederman traveled to Paris in 1936–37 and lived in New York and Chicago before settling in Red Wing, Minnesota, where he remained for the rest of his life.
